Texture: Look for crochet, ruffle, and bow details on tops and dresses.
Color: Brights are back in a big way, and wear 'em together for high impact: pink and yellow, turquoise and purple, green and royal blue. Layer tees and tanks with flowy skirts, and belt for a polished look.
Accessories: Again, bold, bright, unexpected colors work great for purses, necklaces, bracelets, belts, and sandals. Don't forget a hat! Everything from wide brim straw hats to sporty terry visors is out there now, so have fun finding something that fits your style.
Length: UGH! Sad but true, short-shorts are back in. If your legs can handle it, God Bless. Wear your shorts with a longer, flowy top to help keep things in proportion. If you aren't up to up to there hemlines, stick with capris and long skirts and dresses to be totally in-style (and comfortable)!
Multi-Tasker: The tunic! Still fashionable---even more so if you add a wide woven belt. Patterened tunics work well as bathing suit cover-ups, sylish belted over leggings or capris and sandals, and relaxed and comfortable over flowy pants.
- Oversized Earrings: The bigger the better when it comes to earrings this season! You'll see them at the pool, and at play. This is also an easy way to take a work outfit into evening---switch the earrings and you're all set! Popular styles include those with wood, silk, fringe, and metal detailing. You can find these earrings everywhere from Forever 21 to Nordstroms. Pick your price range.
- Bright Watches: Did you get yours yet? Super-bright rubbery watches are showing up everywhere. This is a freat way to work a splash of color into any old oufit! Lime green, yellow, pink, orange...which one will you choose? Some have the added bling of rhinestone details. Others are more simple and bold. You'll find them in all price ranges, too.
- Sunglasses/Headband: Shade those pretty eyes, or slide them up for a quick, carefree style that is great relief for a bad hair day. Sunglasses are always a summer essential and this season you'll find them with animal, metal, and cutout details along the frame front and side. Only problem with the sunglasses/headband trick is that over time the glasses stretch out so much that you can barely keep them on your nose! To tighten plastic frames back up again, soak them in a bowl of hot water for about a minute. This will make the plastic more flexible. Then, gently pull the arms of the glasses back in toward each other, hold in that position for a bit, then set down to let cool. You should be all set to go!
Hot Trends for Back to School
You know you need a backpack for all those books and papers, but they are certainly not just for elementary school kids! Backpacks come in all shapes, styles and colors. Find one that fits your child's personality!
As for fashion trends, casual and cool is the look for fall, and all year-round! Layered clothes always look great and hoodies are fantastic for those crisp autumn days. They also fit easily into a locker (unlike some bulky coats). Other trends include: vintage looks in plaids and stripes, the "preppy" look, patterns on all clothes, shoes, accessories and bags, graphic T-shirts and shocking neon colors.
Have fun shopping and remember to let your child have a say in all decisions. If they like the clothes and are comfortable in them, they'll have more self-confidence to start the year off right!
“NEEDS” List
Back to school is a great time to go through your child's closets and drawers. Before you buy anything for yourself or your child, browse through this list and see if you can save yourself some money before you leave for the mall.
- Look through all closets and drawers and divide the clothes into two piles: "keep" and "give away." If a favorite item doesn't fit and you have to give it away, be sure to write it on your "needs" list.
- Organize your “Needs List” according to types of clothes needed ("jeans," "tops," etc.) or stores where your child likes to shop.
- Set a budget and stick to it!
- Have your kids grade your list ("A" for what they really want, "C" they could live without). This way, you'll all be on the same page and kids will actually wear what you buy!
- Remember when school starts the sales do too. Try to buy the essentials now and the more expensive, not-so-essential items can wait for the sales to start!
