Thoughts on Swimming Pool Safety From a Lifeguard
June 21, 2009 by admin
The kids had been counting down the days until the opening of the swimming pool that we go to; so I pushed aside my swimming suit insecurities, packed up the suntan lotion, put a smile on my face, and got everybody in the car.
I’m not a strong swimmer, and I get a little nervous at the pool, trying to keep constant watch over my no-fear children. I had my little Flip video camera with me and I asked an experienced lifeguard, Lauren, what she would want parents to know about making their children comfortable and keeping them safe at the pool.

How to Fuel Your Young Athlete
June 21, 2009 by admin

We get the right gloves and helmets, and pads to protect them on the outside, but how can we make sure we’re doing all that we can to make them strong on the inside?
As a mom of five football, soccer, tee-ball, and basketball players…this is something I care about!
Here are some things to keep in mind:
1. Serve a variety of healthy foods to make sure they’re getting enough protein(from meat, eggs, and dairy); carbohydrates (from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains); vitamins (from fruits and vegetables; and minerals like calcium (from dairy products). Healthy fats from meats, cheeses, nuts, oils, and butter are needed, too.
2. Kids who practice and play a lot may need more food, because they are burning more calories. Children ages 6 to 12 generally need between 1,600 and 2,500 calories a day.
3. Active kids need to get calcium and iron to build strong bones, and energy.
4. Athletes need to drink water before, during, and after the practice or game. Being hydrated allows our bodies to function at their best levels. Water is the best way to stay hydrated, fruit drinks mixed with water and sports drinks are OK once in a while, but they often include lots of extra sugar and calories.
5. It’s best to eat at least 2 hours before the practice or game so that your child’s body has time to digest the food, and is able to use energy needed to play when the time comes.
Have fun! Play smart.

7 Anti-Aging Foods
Hmmm…seems to be a big focus on anti-aging foods here on the jen Blog…can you tell somebody’s a summer birthday?! Laugh at me if you want, but keep these things on your plate to make sure you grow stronger as you grow older (I’ve been holding at 35 for a while now, and I don’t plan on budging anytime soon)!
1. Greens
Greens contain nutrients like folate and calcium that help keep bones, the brain, and the eyes strong and healthy. Levels of nutrients in broccoli and cabbage have been shown to protect against memory loss and to lower the risk of certain cancers.
2. Whole Grains
It takes our bodies longer to digest whole grains, so replacing processed grains with whole grains can help to prevent high blood sugar and diabetes. Whole gains contains lots of good fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants which can lower the risk of heart disease and some cancers.
3. Berries
Berries are full of antioxidants which have been shown to sharpen brain power, improve muscle tone, and slow the growth of certain cancers.
4. Tomatoes (and other red fruits)
Red fruits contain an antioxidant called lycopene which may reduce the risks of various cancers, and heart disease; as well as improve skin tone and texture.
5. Fish
You’ve heard about omega-3 fatty acids? They are contained in oily fish, and have been proven to support brain function, and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and stroke.
6. Nuts
You only need a small handful to get the benefits of nuts. Nuts contain good fats, as well as vitamins and protein that help to keep your heart and brain healthy.
7. Olive Oil
Olive oil is considered a healthy fat, full of antioxidants which help heart and brain health, as well as a reduction of cancer risk.

Anti-Aging Citrus Salad with Almonds
Looking for a quick light lunch? I usually am. Here’s a fantastic refreshing salad, full of many of the anti-aging superfoods!
What Do I Need?
2 oranges
1 grapefruit (we used red)
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
sugar or sweetener to taste
1 bag of spring mix salad greens
1/4 cup slivered almonds
How Do I Make It?
1. Cut the peel and white membrane off of each of the citrus fruits and then cut the fruit sections into bite sized pieces, removing the seeds as you go along. Do this in a bowl so that you can save the juice from the fruit that will come out as you work with it.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, olive oil, vinegar and sugar/sweetener. Pour this dressing over the fruit and stir to coat.
3. Serve by placing some of the salad greens on a plate, top with the fruit mixture, and then some of the almonds.

Tap Into the Power of Color Energy
Have you every wondered why some colors seem to soothe you while others get you fired up? Maybe you have a favorite “power color” that you like to put on when you want to impress?
